Per the NTA rules, aspiring students can sit for JEE Mains 6 times in 3 years. It is conducted twice each year, once in January and another one in April. This means candidates won’t have to waste an entire year to take the exam again and improve their scores.

Candidates appearing for their 12th Boards and ones who have already qualified the same within the previous 2 years are allowed to take the JEE Main exams. You can check out the updated guidelines on how many attempts for JEE Mains after 12 on the website.

Students can sit for exams for three consecutive years following the year they pass their class 12.

For General Category

General category candidates can attempt the JEE Mains only 3 times. This limit gives equal and fair opportunities to aspiring engineers.

For OBC

OBC (Other Backward Classes) candidates are allowed only three attempts to appear for the JEE Mains. This ensures that even OBC candidates have lucrative opportunities to secure admissions in grade A engineering institutes.

JEE Main scores are only valid for the current year. Meaning students appearing for the 2024 JEE Main exams can apply for admission only for the 2024-25 academic year in any institute of their choice.

How to check the JEE Main score?

Candidates who have appeared for the JEE Mains can check their qualifying marks online. Every year, they are provided with unique login credentials.

Why You Need to Appear for JEE Mains At Least Twice

There are many benefits you can reap by appearing for two JEE Mains sessions. They have been highlighted below:

  • Opportunity to score higher: Candidates unsatisfied with IIT JEE Mains scores in the first session have a better chance of improving them on the second attempt.

  • Learning from mistakes: If you attempt to sit for JEE Mains the second time, you have a better chance of learning from your mistakes. You will more likely overcome them and not repeat them.

  • Avoid dropping a year: Dropping a year can negatively impact your resume. Appearing for JEE Mains twice can reduce this probability.

  • It offers flexibility: If you happen to miss the first session, you do not need to wait one more year to sit for JEE Mains.

Conclusion

Having the mental space to prepare for JEE Mains is the first step for this kind of exam. It is something you need to prepare for simultaneously while sitting for your board examinations. Ensure that you have all points of the eligibility criteria in mind. The NTA updates it every year. Make sure you check out their website from time to time.
