Top 5 HR Interview Questions

Top 5 hr interview questions

1. Tell us something about your recruiting strategies

This might be one of the most common hr interview questions, and this one will perhaps rank right at the top in most of the lists. Hiring remains one of the most critical aspects of your job and your employer would want to know how you navigate it.

Today, HR managers have access to a number of resources to explore recruiting opportunities. So, make sure you’re mentioning them instead of restricting yourself to job sites.

An ideal example would be, “Besides common job sites (Naukri, Indeed, etc.) and the recruiting agencies that my present organization has collaborated with, I usually explore various other channels like our company website and social media channels like LinkedIn and X to diversify my search for top candidates.”

2. Tell us a bit about the software packages you’re familiar with

This one is a common inclusion in the technical interview questions for HR position. In case you are not proficient at the different software technologies, please don’t mention them just because you have heard their names.

So an ideal example would be “I haven’t had the experience in working with a lot of software solutions till now but with the right training, I will be able to adapt quickly.”

If you’re proficient at any of the HR software solutions make sure you’re mentioning them. Some of the commonest HR software solutions are Keka HR, Zoho People, Darwinbox, PeopleStrong, HRMantra etc.

3. What’s your take on employee engagement and how do you think it contributes to company growth?

Here, tell them about the role played by HR professionals to foster an inclusive environment within the organization where employees feel valued. Then, mention the steps you have taken at your current organization to help build a culture of inclusivity.

An ideal example would be “I keep exploring fresh and upcoming avenues of employee engagement. Some of the notable steps I took include implementation of feedback mechanisms, introduction of mentorship programs, and organization of upskilling training programs.”

4. What would you like to tell us about your employee retention techniques?

The employee attrition rate has dropped from 18.7% in 2022 to 16.9% in 2024. However, since recruiters across industries are aiming for much lower numbers in the coming years, do expect this question if you are appearing for an interview for an HR’s manager’s position.

An example answer would be: “I rely on open-ended discussions, employee feedback on our current processes and culture and work-life balance related activities as definitive means to improve employee retention.”

5. Tell us a little bit about your time management skills.

Share concrete examples of how you optimize time.

Example: I like working with my daily checklist where I prioritize tasks according to the instructions from my seniors. Urgent tasks, of course, are always given precedence. Also, I prefer completing time-sensitive and complicated tasks before the simpler ones.
