What Is a Supplementary Exam?

A supplementary or compartment exam is a second chance to clear a subject you didn’t pass in your main exams.

Students who fail one subject in Class 12 or up to two in Class 10 CBSE exams can apply. Those absent for valid reasons may also apply with CBSE’s prior approval.

Who Can Appear?

It helps you avoid repeating the year. Passing the supplementary exam lets you get your final result or promotion without delay.

Why it Matters

Most boards and universities conduct these exams 1–3 months after the main results, usually between June and August.

When Are They Held?

Visit your board/university website.
Fill out the supplementary/compartment form.
Pay the exam fee (if applicable) and download the admit card.

How to Apply?

If you pass, you’ll receive a new marksheet showing “PASS.”
It won’t mention “compartment,” though the issue date may reflect the retest.
